Who were the founding members of the seminal psych-rock band Jefferson Airplane?
Jefferson Airplane were one of the most formative and influential bands of the 1960s. Wait, no, scratch that. They’re one of the most formative and influential bands in rock history. When history talks about the countercultural sound of the ‘60s, and its unending impact today, it’s usually the musical stylings of Jefferson Airplane and their early approach to psychedelic rock that plays in the background.
At the epicentre of the countercultural music scene was San Francisco. Haight-Ashbury became a mecca where hippies from across the country and globe made the pilgrimage to the area, which became a theme park for people tripping on acid while new and experimental bands soundtracked it. At the epicentre of that music scene was Jefferson Airplane, given that they formed in the area in 1965.
They weren’t just pioneering of the San Fran sound that would become celebrated and deeply influential, but they were the first act from the area to achieve real and commercial success. They were proof that even the most psychedelic outfits could make it to the big time in the 1960s and evidence of the world’s growing interest in countercultural, interesting and left-field music. In short, the sound and style of the world was changing, and Jefferson Airplane was leading the way.
But as with most bands with a long history involving many changes in sound across a decade-spanning career, the band’s lineup has seen many shifts and changes. Initially formed by friends, it quickly grew into an expansive lineup where some latecomers became defining figures,
In particular, Grace Slick joined the band in 1966, a year into their life. But while she wasn’t an original member, her introduction and especially their rerecording of her track ‘White Rabbit’ as a Jefferson Airplane song made the band’s name. So even though she wasn’t a founding member, a heavy amount of their legacy lies on her shoulders.
Their history is also confused by the fact that in 1974, after the band dissolved, founding member Paul Kantner alongside Grace Slick started their own band and called it Jefferson Starship. Along with Kantner and Slick, the Jefferson Starship members were ex-Jefferson Airplane musicians David Freiberg, Papa John Creach, John Barbata, as well as Craig Chaquico and Peter Kaukonen.
So, who were the original members of Jefferson Airplane?
Jefferson Airplane was formed in 1965. It all began with Marty Balin, the band’s singer, songwriter and rhythm guitarist. The group was his brainchild as the original and primary founder. But his vision didn’t come to life until he met Paul Kantner and the two singers bonded over a desire to do something trippier than the folk units they’d been in before.
Together, they then recruited the rest of the members. They brought in Signe Toly Anderson, who would later be replaced by Slick as the singer. Then came Bob Harvey, who would later be replaced by Jack Casady on bass. They found Jorma Kaukonen, a long-running member of the troupe, and drummer Jerry Peloquin, who quit within only a few weeks and was replaced by Alexander “Skip” Spence.
However, it wasn’t really until 1966, when the lineup changed, that the band took off. Once Slick joined, Spence was replaced by Spencer Dryden, and Jack Casady joined the group; they found the formation that would make them stars.
