“Our masterpiece”: The 1987 song that captured everything great about The Smiths
“That spiritual quality”.
Morrissey, born Steven Patrick Morrissey in 1959, is an English singer-songwriter, best known for being the frontman of the pioneering indie band The Smiths. They were active from 1982 to 1987, and were one of the most influential groups of their era.
Their first single, ‘Hand in Glove,’ was released in 1983 and put them on the map. Their self-titled debut album was released later that year and surpassed the high expectations. They released three more studio albums before parting ways.
Following The Smiths’ breakup in 1987, Morrissey launched a successful solo career that has spanned over three decades. He has released numerous critically acclaimed albums, including ‘Viva Hate’, ‘Your Arsenal’, and ‘You Are The Quarry’.
Throughout his career, Morrissey has been a controversial figure, often courting controversy with his outspoken political views and controversial statements. He once publicly supported the far right-wing political party For Britain, and called Chinese people a “sub-species” because of their animal rights policies. The singer has also been critical of multicultralism.
Professionally speaking, his work created with The Smiths remains among the most influential in the history of indie music, inspiring bands such as Oasis and The Libertines.
Outside of music, Morrissey published, ‘Autobiography’ in 2013 and the novel ‘List of the Lost’ two years later. Morrissey is still releasing music and touring today.
