Indie, short for independent, refers to a broad cultural and artistic movement that originated outside the mainstream commercial industry. While the term initially described artists and record labels operating independently of major companies, it has since evolved into a stylistic label encompassing music, film and wider creative culture.

In music, indie is often associated with guitar-driven songwriting, DIY ethics and artistic experimentation, although its sound varies widely between artists. Since the 1980s, the genre has produced some of the most influential acts in alternative music, helping launch bands that later achieved mainstream success while retaining an emphasis on creative freedom.
