Kill Rock Stars: the beginnings of Olympia’s famed indie label
“Putting out bands that were meaningful…”

Bikini Kill is an American punk rock band widely recognised as one of the founders of the riot grrrl movement. Formed in Olympia, Washington, in 1990, the group combined raw punk energy with outspoken feminist politics, addressing issues including sexism, sexual violence and gender equality.
Fronted by Kathleen Hanna, Bikini Kill became an influential voice in underground music and inspired generations of musicians and activists through both their music and their DIY ethos.
Although the band initially disbanded in 1997, their legacy continued to grow, leading to a successful reunion in 2019. Today, Bikini Kill remain one of the most important and influential feminist punk bands in music history.
